The streets are alive with irony.

Visited post-riot Croydon last night, the shell of the Reeves Furniture store was being demonished, could still smell the burning. Workmen were just finishing off reconnecting the electricity cables so that the tram could start running again. What a week.
Just home from holiday in Spain. On the way back to the airport we decided to have a look at the "world's best/most exclusive restaurant" El Bulli in Roses. A restaurant can be a little too exclusive, it turned out. This one seems hellbent on bumping off a proportion of its visitors before arrival. We headed down a sidestreet from Roses and like some horror movie as we rounded a corner it turned into a precipitious single lane mountain track with no barriers on the sides. After 10 minutes driving we decided to turn back, rather than risk lives/missing flights etc. No laybys to be found, eventually I screeched into a tiny siding, helpfully described as a "ravine" by those in the passenger seat. So I executed the world's most precise three point turn, narrowly missing a head-on collision with an oncoming car. Never did get to see the home of molecular gastronomy as it closed shortly after. But at least did not die trying.
Three fire engines pack in the car park outside Crawley Town Football stadium last week. What the blazes I thought, imagining the fortunes of Crawley Town had taken a turn for the worse again. Then on the astro-turf pitch I spotted 12 or so fireman with their tops off and uniform trousers rolled up at the leg, playing football in the sunshine. Arsonists be warned, Crawley Town is not a soft target.
My recipe for apple crumble did not mention 10 minutes cursing time on adding your homemade breadcrumbs to the completed crumble mix. Was just about to give it a final satisfied stir when a moth flew out. Put nose near bowl to discover eco-system had established itself in breadcrumbs. When I think of the time spent baking the bread and then grinding it into breadcrumbs with a potato masher. And the additional time spent concocting said crumble mix. Clearly moths are no respecters of supposedly vacuum sealed jars.
Recently accompanied Harris International Marketing on a food to go tour of the Farringdon area of London (ie: outside their offices). We visited about 20 food to go outlets including Eat, Pret, Leon, Greggs, loads of independents, Sainsbury's Fresh Kitchen, the local Boots and Tesco. Some interesting ideas eg: menu boards that slotted out depending on time of day, cooking times noted on price tags to manage customer's expectations. But it is all about the ker-ching and how much ker-ching were they all making I wondered. I got my lunch that day at....Pret.
